Roving Networks’ certified Bluetooth modules are available as the RN-41-APL class 1 and RN-42-APL class 2 modules provide a wireless serial data link between the accessory and application running on the iPhone, iPad or iPod device. LARK chose the Roving Networks Bluetooth module for its low power consumption, small size and on-board iOS support. LARK is a revolutionary sleep performance device that has become a hit product with health and fitness enthusiasts, to ensure users wake feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead of them.
LARK transforms your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad into a sleep and health tool. It is the first, patent pending, silent and natural feeling wake-up that rouses you from sleep without disturbing your partner. Equipped with a cutting edge sleep sensor, LARK also tracks your sleep, monitors and analyzes your sleep patterns, and coaches you on how to improve so you can wake your potential through better sleep. LARK is available through the Apple Store and is priced at $99 USD.
Roving Networks’ Bluetooth module reduces design effort and development time by managing the iAP interface, allowing developers to focus effort on their application. Authentication management and negotiation is handled directly by the Roving module.
Alvin Lacson from LARK Technologies explained, “We needed a low power Bluetooth module that worked with the iPhone without requiring a lot of additional work. Roving’s module allowed us to meet our aggressive schedule and deliver a full featured, quality product. The Roving team was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the process; allowing us to meet our goal on time.”
Developers of electronic accessories that connect to iPod, iPhone, and iPad must be actively enrolled in the Apple ‘Made for iPod’ program (http://developer.apple.com/ipod/) and should contact Roving Networks for availability (http://www.rovingnetworks.com).
In addition to the iAP protocol, Roving’s Bluetooth solutions also support the Human Interface Device (HID) profile, Serial Port Profile (SPP) and Host Controller Interface (HCI). Roving’s Bluetooth modules are used in 1000’s of devices to communicate with smart phones, computers and other Bluetooth enabled platforms. Roving Bluetooth modules are available in class 1 (RN-41-APL) that offers over 100m range or class 2 (RN-42-APL) which offers 30m range.
The Roving Networks’ Bluetooth development kit for use with iPhone, iPad and iPod is priced at $695 USD. The kit includes both hardware and software for developing a system prototype. The development board is comprised of the Roving module, authentication hardware, status LEDs and interface headers for quick prototyping. An additional four Bluetooth modules are also provided for use with pilot PCBs during the development phase. Source code to the Roving Networks terminal emulator App, BlueConnect, is also provided and available royalty free to all development kit users as a basis for their end application.
