There is broad market appeal for systems that sense environmental conditions surrounding a tagged item, and either log that information or communicate it immediately. Leveraging the pervasive Wi-Fi infrastructure that exists in enterprises, retail outlets, factories, and warehouses, companies can tag items for a very low cost and monitor such things as temperature, motion, security and shock. By programming the tag to trigger an alarm when an event occurs, for example, the breaking of a security seal or a temperature reaching a pre-set value, such things as theft and spoilage could be avoided. With battery-backed sensor tags that last for many years and wireless communication, the implementation cost of a monitoring system is extremely low – no new infrastructure, no cables to pull, and no large software development since notification of an event can occur over the Internet.
